Blinded By the Light

An actor performs for his audience yet as the spotlight's beam penetrates the darkness of the stage, he loses sight of his audience. It has been written, "we are now living in a 'me' society filled with Facebook selfies and 'because-I-think' rationales." Is this the life a Christian should be living? Let us consider a few Biblical examples.

  • John the Baptist, the man chosen by God to pave the way for His son's ministry, knew when to step aside. (Matthew 3) It was not about him and his message to the Jews. It was about the great messenger — Christ.
  • Mary, the mother of Jesus considered herself a, "bondslave of the Lord," (Luke 1:30–38). Through her prayer, recorded in Luke 1:46- 55, she praised God's greatness and proclaimed her humility. It was not about her glory rather her servitude.
  • Isaiah, a prophet whose words Jesus quoted, did not question or ask for time to consider if he would follow God. Isaiah 6:8-9 records his response when called by God, "here am I, send me." It was not about his convenience or wellbeing; it was about answering God's call.
  • Stephen, brought before the Council and high priest, faced the death penalty for blasphemy (Acts 7). Rather than using his time for defense telling of his good reputation and all the reasons to spare his life he tuned the spotlight on God and told the history of the blessings He had showered on the Jewish people. It was not about him, it was about saving lost souls.
  • Daniel was elevated to a high position in King Nebuchadnezzar's empire because of his ability to interrupt dreams and visions (Daniel 2:19-28). He did not proclaim his greatness yet that of God's, for wisdom and power belong to Him. It was not about Daniel, it was about God's power.
Be careful! Be aware! Do not allow the spotlight to blind your purpose while here on Earth, for the glory of God (Isaiah 43:7). Turn your attention to God's guiding light (Psalms 119:105) which will lead you home (Matthew 7:21).
